How to get MKV files playing on extenders

This is a common question - How to get MKV files playing on extenders.

Unfortunately on older extenders there is simply no way to get a MKV file working. This is becuase the H.264 codec is not part of those systems and therefore not able to be decoded for play back. Newer systems, however can be use to play back MVK files. As always this is not guaranteed. If MVK files are going to be played back on an extender there are two things you need to do:

1. install the DivXHD codec. It is important to note that the DivXHD installation file will give you the choice of installing many items. You need to deselect all except for the codec package itself.

2. You will need an AAC decoder. AAC is a very common audio codec used in MKV files. Since you have an ASENT media centre you will already have this installed.
2a. If you have an Xbox 360 as an extender then you will need to download the AAC update package. If your Xbox has been set up by ASENT as a media extender then this will already be done for you.

And that is it. If your media extender is able to play MKV files then it should now work. But, as mentioned earlier, not all extenders are created equal and so not all will play MKV files successfully.

If you have any other questions please ask here in this forum.
